Selecting the Right Gas Grill – What You Need and What You Don’t

Summer has come to the Minneapolis area – at last! Now who would want to miss a minute of all this nice weather? If you’re among the many who love to enjoy the great outdoors but also need to feed your family after a long day of work and play, we’ve got a solution for you – relocate your kitchen!

Outdoor kitchens continue to be one of the most popular trends in landscape design today, with a good grill being one of the central features. Now, before you run out and buy a new grill, it’s good to be clear on exactly what you need in a grill, as they can vary widely in price range and convenience features. We’ll help you navigate through all the bells and whistles so you come home with the right grill for your outdoor entertaining needs.

There are several types of grills to choose from, with the main ones being charcoal and gas.  Recently electric grills have really exploded in popularity, but gas remains popular because it doesn’t require a utility hook-up.   (However, you may opt for having a gas line put in if you prefer.)

Gas grills fall into three major price categories: basic, mid-range and high-end.

  • A basic grill generally costs between $100 and $200. This small grill would be great for someone who just wants a simple barbecue without all the extras.
  • Up next is the mid-priced grill, ranging anywhere from $200 to $500. Many models in this price range are large enough to cook for 10 people at once, making it the perfect choice for most outdoor cooks. Some of these grills also include side burners, making additional food prep a bit easier.
  • Finally, if you’re interested in a high-end grill, you’ll be looking at a price tag of anywhere from $500 to 1,500. If you’re an avid cook and like having the entire neighborhood over for barbecues, this would be the grill type for you! Many of these all-stainless steel grills also have attached rotisserie burners.

And don’t forget about accessories! Basting brushes, grips, and tongs can make your outdoor meal prep a lot easier.
