Outdoor Living Made Comfortable
Are you considering adding a bar to your outdoor living space? Add an outdoor bar to your property as a part of your outdoor kitchen, or as an element that stands alone, perhaps by a pool, garden, or patio. Instead of creating a bar that is just so-so, we want to help you build one that you love to spend time in, and feel excited to share with your friends and family.
We want to help you see your yard as a functional space, which you can entertain in, relax in, and use just as you would a well-loved room in your home. To create a bar like this, we feel that it is important to consider comfort, design integration, and customized details.
At Architectural Landscape Design (ALD), we believe that the outdoors is meant to be lived in. Outdoor living entails seeing the outdoors as an extension of your interior environment. Outdoor living spaces should feel just as inviting and comfortable as interior spaces, and moving from one to the other should feel seamless. Hardscaping is the key that will create this seamless feel.
A Deck for the Seasons
Typically, a deck serves as a wonderful place to entertain when the weather is nice. During the spring and fall, you will get plenty of use out of your deck, but what about the fall and winter? Fortunately, you have a couple of options. For instance, you can opt for a three seasons deck.
A 3 seasons deck includes features that allow you to use your deck during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. However, when the chilly winter season rolls in, it is best to move your entertainment back indoors.
Usually, a three seasons deck will have an enclosure around it. For instance, you can screen in the area so that bugs and other pests cannot get in. By placing an enclosure around the deck, you can also provide coverage over your head, meaning you can entertain rain or shine.
A 4 seasons deck is another option, and what that allows you to entertain all year round. With a four seasons deck, you will also have an enclosure that surrounds the space. However, the enclosure is typically made of glass rather than mesh screen. The glass keeps the space cool in the summer and warm in the winter, like a sunroom.
You can place a heating unit on the deck, so the space is functional and warm during the winter months, too. Since the purpose of a deck is to enjoy the outdoors, you would want to opt for either mesh screen or glass enclosure, so the outdoors remains visible while you are relaxing or entertaining on your deck.
We offer Trex composite solutions for custom decks. Available in 18 different colors, Trex decking provides a maintenance-free alternative to wood decks. With three Trex varieties to choose from, (Select, Enhance, Transcend), and seven composite railing colors, we can help you create a personalized deck or porch.
A Mega Deck
A mega deck is another option you may want to consider, especially if you have a large enough space and the budget to spare. Mega decks expand your home’s footprint and provide plenty of additional space for entertaining. You can even incorporate an outdoor kitchen if you have a mega deck built onto your home.
Your options for a mega deck are near endless. Some people turn the space into an outdoor kitchen, outdoor living area, or outdoor entertainment room. You will find elaborate photos depicting the outdoor space with features such as a bar, a fireplace, comfortable furnishings, a flatscreen television, and more.
Another option is to add a multi-level deck to your home. With a multi-level deck, you can incorporate varying shapes and decorative details. Keep in mind that this style of deck is better for homes with a larger space to work with, whereas smaller yards are not ideal.
If you have a smaller yard and opt for a multi-level deck, it can make the yard appear even smaller. A deck with multiple levels complements larger yards, though. You can create the deck, so the lower level wraps around your pool or hot tub, and the upper level offers a space where your guests can relax and stay dry. In truth, your design ideas are near endless.
Weatherproofing Your Deck
Whether you decide to place an enclosure around your deck or not, you should still make sure you weatherproof it. Weatherproofing protects the wood from damages caused by too much sun exposure and too much moisture.
Usually, weatherproofing your deck is as simple as applying a weatherproof coat to it. First, you want to make sure your deck is clean and clear of any debris. Remove all furnishings and décor and sweep the deck. After you sweep, spray it down with water to remove any additional dirt, dust, and debris. Once the deck is both clean and dry, you will want to apply a weatherproof stain or sealant.
Weatherproofing your decks protects the wood from warping and rotting. Without weatherproofing, you could find yourself having to repair or even replace your deck within just a few years. However, proper maintenance and weatherproofing measure can ensure your deck lasts for many years without the worry of replacement or repair.
Working with a Professional
You will often find many videos and guides explaining how easy and affordable it is to take the DIY route when it comes to deck building and installation. Unfortunately, that is not the case. If you lack decent carpentry skills, the DIY route could end up costing you more money than you expected.
Instead, you should opt to work with a professional like us. We can turn your dream deck into a reality. Whatever you can conjure up in your mind, we can help you create it. Take into consideration that we will have to work within the limitations of your space. Obviously, you cannot demand a mega deck if you have a tiny backyard.
However, we can certainly provide you with an outdoor space that works well for your wants and needs. Whether you simply want an outdoor space where you can relax, or you want somewhere to entertain, we can help you achieve that.
Enclosed decks work great for both large and small homes. You can enclose even the smallest of decks if you wish. An enclosed deck offers perhaps the most versatility because it acts as an extension of both the interior and exterior of your home. Of course, if you are unsure which route you should take, we can always offer our expert opinion and advice.
We can offer tips based on the layout of your home and yard to help you determine what deck layout works best for you. Make sure you let us know what purpose you want the deck to serve so you can have the deck of your dreams. At ALD, we love turning your home design dreams into a reality.
