Fall has arrived in the Twin Cities! Warm days and crisp nights mean the trees are losing their leaves, and much of your landscaping is probably dying back. But just because call is here, don’t ignore your grass.
When it comes to keeping your lawn as healthy as it can be this fall, you want to make sure that you’re doing everything that you can to get it in the shape you want it to be in. If you’re thinking about the upcoming winter, then you need to be prepared for what lies ahead. Here are some tips to keep in mind.
- Make sure to mow your grass to between 2 and 2.5 inches.
- Even though the weather is cool, make sure to water your lawns so that they can store it for the upcoming winter months.
- Fertilize your lawn during the month of October. You want to give the lawn enough nutrients to store before the snow starts falling.
- Control all of those weeds. This could be by pulling them up by hand or using a mild herbicide. Just be careful when using weed spray that you don’t get it on anything you want to keep growing, like your flowers.
- Sweep the debris up off the lawn. Any lawn clippings or leaves should be removed from the sidewalks, roads, drive way and yard.
Leaf Recycling
- Use your leaves for compost. You can then provide nutrients to your plants and it keeps the leaves out of the sewers, gutters and streets.
- Use it as mulch to protect your plants from the harsh winter that is coming. Just shred it up and throw it on.
- If there are two inches or less of leaves on the lawn, then mow them up. You just have to make sure that they are chopped down into smaller pieces. This can also provide covering and nutrients for your lawn.
- Bag them up and leave them out to be picked up by the city.
