Path Lighting Lets You Provide a Welcoming and Safe Atmosphere

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

Does your landscape fade into obscurity when the sun goes down?  Have you ever tripped walking up your deck stairs in the dark?  Perhaps your favorite shrubbery looks great in the sunshine, but at night it’s nowhere to be seen.  Your deck or patio is a great place to gather during the day, but at night it seems uninviting. The answer to all these dilemmas is path lighting.

my15c3Unlike harsh floodlights and bright spots, low-voltage path lighting casts a soft glow, gently illuminating those areas of your yard – especially walkways and stairs – which safety or aesthetics  make good candidates for lighting.  Dark stairs and walking paths can be treacherous, even if you think you know your way around your yard.  But some strategically-placed path lights such as those shown here can light up your walkways and stairs with a warm and welcoming glow.

In addition to added safety, low-voltage path lighting allows you to highlight areas of your landscape you want to bring attention to, define spaces, and gently guide your visitors around your yard.

Outdoor landscape lighting is relatively small and unobtrusive, and it doesn’t require much maintenance.  Periodically you’ll need to make sure your lights are cleared of debris, such as during fall leaf season, or snow in the winter.  Bulbs need changing from time to time, although they are relatively long-lived.  And when it comes to design, you’ve got a lot of options.  Low voltage lighting can be mounted or installed in a variety of areas:

  • In mulch beds alongside pathways, as shown above
  • Under stair risers or beside steps
  • Under roof or pergola edges
  • At the base of trees and shrubs
  • Overhead on tree trunks to cast a romantic downward glow
  • On fences or masonry walls

Low-voltage lighting lets you turn your yard into a magical place after dark.  A lighting plan that fits with your home’s decor as well as your overall landscape design can make your yard just as beautiful and inviting after dark as it is during the day.  Not only will your landscape be a safer place to take a stroll, you and your guests will enjoy lingering in the invitingly soft glow.

At ALD we design and install outdoor lighting layouts to put your home and landscape in a favorable and attractive light.  We also offer regular maintenance if you desires.

Your Yard Will Come Alive After Dark With the Right Landscape Lighting

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

Does your beautifully-landscaped home fade from view when the sun sets?  If your only yard illumination is twinkling lights at the holidays, and a sconce beside your front entry the rest of the year, it may be time to consult an experienced landscape lighting professional to help you shed some light on that gorgeous exterior all year round.

Landscape lighting can serve many functions.  A patio that’s a great place to gather for lunch could turn into a late-night party spot with the right lighting.   Note the patio in this photo – a sunny spot to relax during the day becomes an outdoor room to enjoy at night when the right lighting is incorporated.   Or perhaps you’ve got some spectacular flowers or trees you’d like to put the spotlight on so they’re in view even after dark.  Even unique masonry or stone features benefit from strategically-placed lighting.

Landscape lighting can do so much more than illuminate walkways for safety; the right lights in the right place can transform your home’s exterior and its surrounding areas into inviting outdoor spots.  Here are some PHOTOS to give you ideas, along with some basic information on the different types of lighting available.   There are a wide variety of types and styles available, so if you’re somewhat overwhelmed by your choices, you may want to consult a landscape designer who specializes in landscape lighting to make sure you get the intended effect.

Architectural Landscape Design is a licensed Minnesota outdoor lighting contractor, and since we’re also landscape designers, we can help you select lighting that will not only illuminate your home at night but transform your entire yard whent the sun goes down.

Turn A Drab Winter Landscape Into Something To Look At When You’re Shoveling

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Now is a great time to consider making some changes to your landscaping which will provide beauty and interest this winter.  What makes a popular plant for the winter landscape that is sometimes nothing more than a blanket of white? You can generate some winning combinations if you combine plantings and hardscapes. An alternative to concrete such as pavers and natural stone walkways can add interest against the winter white and remind you of the promise of spring. They should be considered for their year-round beauty.

Evergreen shrubs and conifer trees always add visual interest with the difference in their leaf structure. Rhododendrons (aside from their leaves turning green to red in the fall) remain on, giving a delicate leaf to view in the winter. Red color can be added with the  bark of the red twig dogwoods, and the shaggy bark of birches adds to the view out a window.  A winning plant or tree for a charming winter landscape must be a plant that has one or more of the following characteristics:

- Contains colorful berries that birds like so you get berries and birds in the mix

- Catches snow on its branches and even ice when it freezes

- Has bark that has interesting structure or bark color to look at when there aren’t any leaves

- Bears evergreen foliage

- Has an interesting branch pattern

- Has a delicate structure

- Has enough height so it doesn’t get dwarfed or buried by the snow

There is also something incredibly beautiful about the moon shining on snow in the winter. You can create this winter interest in your garden by introducing low-voltage lighting that showcases your plantings in different ways using focal lights, up lights, path lights, etc.

As outdoor lighting contractors, landscape designers, and landscape architects we can enhance what you see when you look out your windows this winter. Our MN landscape design company would be happy to sit and talk about your ideas for creating beauty that can turn winter in your yard like a painting you view. Call us at 952-292-7717.

Isolate Your Garden From the Dark With Lighting

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

Your yard and garden can be isolated from the dark world outside by introducing lighting to your landscape. Lighting will allow you to enjoy the scene out your window from indoors in any season and in any kind of weather. What is more beautiful than being able to watch big snowflakes float down from the sky, or to be able to watch big drops of spring rain on a stormy night?

Lighting in your landscape apart from the practical function of providing security can be used artfully to create your gardens own aura. It’s like lighting a room in your house if you use up lighting, dimmers, lamps, and overhead lights you can create a variety of moods based on the light. Safety is key; lighting for safety around stairs and along sidewalks or pathways always makes sense as a basic lighting requirement. You can go the next step to accentuate your garden as a sanctuary by illuminating entire areas.

A lot of outdoor lighting is done with spotlights and floodlights. There is an art to lighting, if it isn’t done right you may increase the number of insects you are attracting. So you want to keep the lighting away from outside sitting and dining areas.

Garden areas and lower features like low spreading evergreens are often lighted from above. This manner of lighting can somewhat replicate sunlight and moonlight. Using light from below can make higher features pop out, like the gnarly limbs of an old oak. If there is a feature in your yard that you really love and want to have stand out backlighting may be the answer.  We will work with you and experiment with the placement and type of lighting used until we get the effect you want.

As an outdoor lighting contractor we can combine that knowledge with that of our landscape designers and architects to give you the best lighting plan that evokes the atmosphere you are looking to create.  Call our Minneapolis landscape design company today on 952-292-7717.

Atriums Add Captivating Space and Light to A House

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

Atriums are a popular addition to houses or a design feature because they add “a feeling of space and light.” An atrium typically is a large open space, sometimes several stories high that has a glazed roof. There are large windows also. They are either located right outside main entrance doors to a house or they are in the center of the house. They allow a homeowner to feel like they are outdoors all yearlong!

The famous Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina has one of the best examples of a wonderful atrium. While they are great additions to one’s house, there can be some issues if the initial assessment of the space’s needs isn’t performed correctly. The two main areas to review have to do with light and drainage.

The ALDM landscape designers and architects are experienced at building atriums. They work in the design phase to determine what rooms will face the atrium. They will incorporate the home’s architecture and the homeowner’s wish list of how the space will be used. In the planning step they investigate the light and drainage conditions that will affect construction.

What the atrium is used for can run the gamut; you may choose to fill yours with loose gravel, and a couple of favorite sculptures and a bench for meditation or serious thinking and enjoyment. Atriums can be quite formal paved with brick in a formal manner, or they can be informal. Atriums can be paved to create a courtyard, as long as drainage is provided. Plants can thrive in an atrium. The ALDM landscape designers will work with you. If you want to have “living” sculptures installing topiary frames and training climbing shade-loving vines over them.

The uses for atriums abound. You can use it for raising Japanese bonsai, running a model train, or simply using it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We can plan and install indoor and outdoor lighting that makes your atrium light up the night and your yard. Call us on 952-292-7717 today!

Make It A ‘Green’ X-Mas This Year With Energy-Saving LED Holiday Lights | Outdoor lighting Services Edina MN

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Back in the early days when people first began decorating the exteriors of their homes and Christmas trees for the holidays, actual wax candles were sometimes brought in to do the job. Now I don’t have to tell you why this was an exceedingly dangerous and unpopular idea.

In the decades to follow, companies like General Electric satisfied the growing demand for safe, affordable Christmas lights by manufacturing strings of variously colored tiny bulbs, which became the industry main-stay for a very long (I remember these as a kid myself). Then an extensive lull came over the Christmas Light industry, with no new technology arriving on the scene for decades, until only just recently: LED lights.

Light Emitting Diodes, regularly called LEDs, are really nothing more than just tiny light bulbs that fit easily into an electrical circuit. But unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs, they don’t have a filament that will burn out, and they don’t get especially hot. In fact, LED lights give off such a low amount of heat, that they remain cool to the touch, even after they’ve been turned on and going for hours. This is much safer for curious children, and obviously reduces fire danger when you’re not at home.

Plus, LED’s only use about 10% of the energy that regular Christmas bulbs require. And whereas the old fashioned lights would last around 1,200 to 1,500 hours each, LED lights can go for an impressive 50-60,000 hours! Over time, this dramatic shift in energy output will save you hundreds of dollars when you get that dreaded electric bill in January.

In addition to the conservation benefits, LED’s give off a more radiant, gorgeous glow, their brilliance doesn’t fade over time, and they’re even programmable and dimmable should you wish to do so. The choice seems obvious to me. Make it an LED Christmas! Our outdoor Edina Holiday lighting services team at Architectural Landscape Design are waiting to help you and your family do exactly that by making it a more Earth-friendly green holiday season this year with their wide selection of LED holiday Christmas lights and displays. So do your part this Christmas and get more by using less energy. It only takes a phone call: 952-292-7717.

Be The Toast Of Eden Prairie This Holiday With A Dazzling Display Of Outdoor Christmas Lights

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Following the end of WW2, the United States enjoyed many years of unparalleled prosperity. For the first time, household appliances became commonplace, families took vacations together, and more Americans than ever before purchased automobiles. The car has probably done more to alter the way we live today than any other convenience over the last century. As odd as it may sound at first, widespread automobile usage actually helped pave the way for outdoor holiday lighting.

As a way of mimicking New York’s famed Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, businesses in Los Angeles along Wilshire Blvd. (the ‘Miracle Mile’) set-up 27 giant illuminated showmen in 1957. Reflective of the urban sprawl of Southern California, the Wilshire Blvd. display appealed to passing motorists who could look out their windows as they drove past and enjoy the lights. The public loved it.

In the coming years, this unique automobile-centered approach to community light designs inevitably lead to bigger, brighter, and ultimately more spectacular light displays capable of catching passengers’ attention as they drove by. In fact, one famous mile-long display of lights in Altadena California were so bright that passing cars didn’t even need their headlights on to see where they were going.

Pretty soon businesses all across the southland started holding seasonal competitions to see who could produce the most incredible Christmas light displays, and before long, adjacent neighborhoods got into the craze as well, stringing lights along the eves of their homes, and throughout shrubs and trees. Fancy electrical light displays for the front lawn weren’t too far behind either, and within a matter of only a year or so, a nation-wide holiday tradition was born.

These days, when motorists head-out in search of the most beautiful outdoor light displays at Christmas, they’ve traded in the commotion of downtown for the hush of suburbia. Neighborhood homes ablaze in outdoor holiday lights now draw many thousands of admirer’s each December. From Santa Monica California to your very own Eden Prairie Minnesota, Christmas is the time to show off your joyful spirit. Call ALDMN for Outdoor Holiday Lighitng Services Eden Prairie MN at 952-292-7717 and let there be light!
