Boulder Landscaping: Retaining Walls, Waterfalls, Cascading Pools

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Landscaping with boulders opens up a world of possibilities. Using only natural stone you can transform a landscape or solve many problems in a yard. When you use natural stone boulders you are designing an accent or landscape feature that will be a life long thing.

We have all seen landscapes where it appears that boulders were just taken off a truck and placed in the yard. Our landscape designers and architects will develop a specific plan with your yard in mind. They will place the boulders in such a way that it can look like Mother Nature did it herself. Or if you’re looking for a dramatic look boulder can be used to create stunning designs and applications.

What are some of the uses? Natural looking boulder retaining walls are one of the most popular retaining walls. They provide a great backdrop for brightly colored perennials, annuals and trees. You can also create planting beds or pockets in the boulder wall or you can make it a boulder bluff and keep going up a hill.

One of the most dramatic uses for boulders in a yard is to create a waterfall, a series of waterfalls, or a series of cascading pools. The placement of the boulders and the color really dictate how natural it will look and will emphasize the different colors of stone. Another common use for boulders is the railroad timber wall replacement; when timber means timber and the wall is literally falling down! When it’s rotting and white gray in color its time to replace it. Boulders work great! Plus they don’t have any of the arsenic that railroad timbers have had that can leach into the soil and be unsafe.

Our MN landscape design group would love to come to your house and plan your landscaping with you. Boulders can add to any yard, call us today to talk about how we could introduce them in your yard, 952-292-7717.

Patios A Hundred Different Ways

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

It used to be that a patio was a grey concrete slab with some folding metal chairs. Obviously, those days are gone! Today, there are hundreds of ways to design patios and countless materials to choose from to create a patio. You can use brick, concrete, brick pavers, cobblestones, stamped concrete, natural stone, marble, tile, and the list goes on.

How is the best way to choose what will work with your house, fences, driveway, and paths and fit in your neighborhood? Our landscape designers and architect can help you design the right patio or patios for your space. They’ll help you narrow down the choices of materials to one or a combination of materials that complements your yard’s design. Another benefit is they know the natural stones quarried in this area that is another option to consider.

The shape, style and placement of the patio you choose is very personal. It has to do with what your expected uses are of that space. A patio is typically no more than a well-drained area that is somewhere to sit and play. But when you add on your personal expectations it takes it to the next level.

You may like the look and feel of the very basic rectangular patio. That is always a good option for a small garden space. But geometric combinations of circles and rectangular spaces together are very dynamic. They can be used very effectively to create separate patio outdoor living rooms. We can easily design those to be on different levels to increase the visual interest of your yard also.

Another option is to consider adding built-in furniture. It’s a great time and space saver when you don’t have to take the time and plan at the end of each season how and where to store garden furniture. We can build stone bench seats and stone-slab coffee and dining tables that are available for year around use, summer dining and winter prep areas for cross country skiing. Night lighting: Light your Yard for the Pleasure of Increased Outdoor Entertaining and Family Time

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

A light above the door and a post lantern in the front yard with a floodlight in the back yard used define outdoor lighting. Now there is no limit to the types of lighting for yards. The best systems for lighting your house at night provide three things: safety, security, and ambiance or mood.

Take an inventory with these three requirements in mind. Our MN landscape designers and architects at Alternative Landscape Design can offer advice and show you how they have incorporated night lighting plans in multiple landscapes.

Safety is critical, look at both your hardscapes and yard. Whether you are entertaining or just stepping outside you need to be able to see well enough to avoid injuries. Start by walking from the street up to your front entry, walk around to the back of the yard. Try any stairs; look for blind spots, any uneven or broken walkways. Is there any place on your landscape where someone could run into an object or possibly due to the drop offs take a tumble? We can light up stairs, retaining walls, fences, patios, decks, and sidewalks by installing low-voltage fixtures such as path lights, or riser lights. This type of lighting also directs traffic keeping people in lit places increases safety.

A well lit yard discourages burglars and intruders increasing security. We can help install lighting that is well shielded so it doesn’t disturb your neighbors or you.

Mood lighting through up-lighting, down-lighting, and side-lighting can add a magical relaxing feel to your yard. It also increases the time you’re able to use your backyard and makes it safer.

Install points of light that provide security and safe passage in your yard while protecting the mood. If you are interested in night lighting don’t hesitate to call us today on 952-292-7717.

A Private Yard Equals Peace of Mind

Friday, November 18th, 2011

The peace of mind a yard offers is often a result of how much privacy a yard affords the homeowners. Start by being your own private eye, look around your yard. What do you want and need for privacy? Check it out from all angles. Go inside and consider your needs from that vantage point. When you stand at your kitchen sink, are you looking into a neighbor’s window or looking at their siding? If you need privacy at a window, planting evergreens won’t leave you exposed even in the winter. Window boxes can also screen your window from onlookers plus improve the view.

Go out into your yard sit in different locations around your yard, are there intimate and open spaces? Is the neighbor’s noise bothering you? Think of what will make you feel most comfortable in your yard. If your needs for privacy are met you will spend more time outdoors, enjoying all your yard has to offer.

Making plans? Our MN landscape designers and architects can help create the privacy your yard requires. We can help you in deciding the fence type, location, materials, and height that could work. Solid backyard fences offer complete privacy, but sometimes all that’s needed is a privacy screen for sunbathing, or a partially screening fence for fountains or seating areas. Where you only want to screen some views, say the air conditioner unit, we can offer solutions that include tall ornamental grasses, lacy bushes, or latticed panels or fences.

Solving the problem or noise nuisance from the street or other neighbor’s yards can be resolved with adding trees or shrubbery that  add insulation or windbreaks. Or adding water features like waterfalls, streams, and fountains that through the sound of splashing water help mask the noise.

We can help you develop your privacy plan to create complete or partial privacy, set aside areas for different uses, conceal unattractive areas, and minimize noise and wind. Call 952-292-7712 for a free one hour no commitment consultation.

Extend Your Outdoor Seasons with Heat

Friday, November 18th, 2011

When the temperature starts going down in the evening that is no reason to shorten a meal or go inside. You want your guests to be comfortable so aside from passing out blankets what can you do? There are several options to consider that our MN landscape designers and architects would be happy to review and make a plan that meet’s your needs.

You can install an outdoor fireplace so your alfresco dining and outdoor living can continue into the night and the next season. You can locate it on the edge of a patio, against a wall, or even in a corner to make it cozy. These can be used year around: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer! You can add areas for wood storage underneath so in the winter you don’t have to trek out to some remote woodpile to stoke the fire. You can also add stone ledges or mantels to the fireplace. This provides the opportunity for outdoor seasonal decorations and holiday lighting, plus a good place to put drinks.

Fire pits with a pile of logs burning in the middle are simply mesmerizing. It takes you back to roasting marshmallows, campfires, and camping. Fire pits can be sunk totally in the ground or built half way out of the ground with a retaining wall structure built from natural stones. You can have some fun and break away from the traditional round shape and go oblong to make it bigger allowing for more people to sit around it. If you want to go a step further have some stone built furniture, like sofas and chairs around the fire pit that you can add cushions and blankets to for that cozy campfire sleeping bag feel.

A fireplace or fire pit can add a fantastically fiery focal point to your yard call 95292-7717 to add some more warmth to your yard.

Great Curb Appeal Welcomes Family, Friends, and You!

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Curb appeal…does your house have it? It’s that charm that makes people take a second look and welcomes family and friends. If your front yard is inviting it will help guide your guests on how to enter your house, and even park their cars. Create a winding or straight hardscape walkway or sidewalk from the curb to the front porch with stepping stones, concrete, flagstone, pavers, or brick. Add a stone or brick courtyard for a place to meet and sit with family and friends. Color, texture, fragrance, and even a little whimsy, can make the trip to your welcome mat a pleasurable trip.

There may be some similar styles of houses in your neighborhood, or common rooflines, driveways and garages. What’s in front of your house can keep it from being lost in the sameness. By repeating your house’s colors and textures in retaining walls, driveways, sidewalks, you can blend your house and yard together like in a painting. Color draws the eye so you can use it in your building materials to redirect attention from garage doors and other areas you want to de-emphasize.

Your house can be individual with a well-designed plan to create year around appeal. Our MN landscape designers and architects will design a yard with you that makes people passing by take a second look. An interesting front yard also pays off monetarily as it increases the property value of a house. Great curb appeal is often what makes buyers take notice of a house and keeps them coming back

Planting flowers and shrubs that bloom throughout all the seasons will ensure that there is something that always draws attention and provides beauty for you. You can plant flowering border plants for spring, shrubs with red berries or red branches will brighten up the fall and provide a show all against the snow.

If you are interested in increasing your curb appeal call us today on 952-292-7717.
