Adding Some “Sizzle” With Fireplaces and Fire Pits to Light Up Your Night

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Does the thought of seeing dancing flames and hearing a fire “sizzle” on a cool night or day warm you up? You can build fires in your backyard in the spring, fall, and winter, and yes even on a cool summer night.

You can add an outdoor fireplace to an exterior wall of your house or place one on the patio. Or you can build a fire pit. You can take the chill off on a spring or fall night and welcome people to your home on a winter night by adding a fire element.

Our MN designers and landscape architects have a lot of experience in designing fireplaces and fire pits with many options. We can check on any local regulations to determine if there are any use restrictions where you live, such as clearance requirements of an open flame from combustible surfaces and structures.

We can build you a fireplace or fire pit from brick or natural stone that either uses wood or gas. A freestanding fire pit built above the ground serves as an informal gathering place with seating even when it’s not “fired up”. You can add a cover so when it’s not in use it functions as a table for entertaining. Or best yet add some “sizzle” to a night and invite family and friends over for marshmallows and s’mores. Or you can build it flush with your patio so you can cover it with a lid once the fire is out. Adding cooking grates for barbecuing is another plus.

Whatever your choice fireplaces and fire pits offer another focal point for your yard year around. They’ll  increase the pleasure you’ll find in your yard and add to the value of your property. Welcome nightfall to your yard with a little “sizzle” contact us on 952-292-7710.

Landscaping Away Ugly Utility Areas

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

It’s unfortunate, but it’s true most houses have some ugly utility areas that would be better hidden from view. See if one of these appears in your yard. Taking a critical second look may present an opportunity to turn a place you would like to avoid looking at into an area that you may enjoy.

These areas run the gamut from garbage cans, dog runs, swimming pools, outdoor above ground spas, spa pumps, compost heaps, compost containers, tool sheds, air conditioning units, vents coming out from the house, utility meters, etc.  All of these can strike a discordant note in an  other wise harmonious, well designed, beautiful yard.

The type of barrier you use may be governed by some local requirements. Our licensed and educated landscape designers and architects can review what the specific requirements are where you live. What exactly you use can be determined by what you already have in your yard. They can also look at what the year around effect will be. For example, trees planted in front of dryer vents coming from the house can be subjected to a lot of winter stress.

The more you follow what you already have—-shrubs, fences, walls, hedges—the more unity you will have in your landscape. Plus, it won’t call attention to the addition of the barrier you put up, which might otherwise draw unwanted attention to it.  Function over form, sometimes prevails, like a chain link fence for the dog, when every other fence is red cedar. But you might want to build a cedar fence in front of the chain link fence and front it with trees or add flower boxes to the fence to give the illusion of a smaller space or “outdoor” room. Or you could add some cedar trellis in front of the chain link fence so it visually blocks the area.

If you are interested in adding some landscape barriers in your landscape call our MN landscape company today on 952-292-7712.

Giving Your Minneapolis Garden the Right Wardrobe

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

If you like to garden, then there are a few basics that every gardener needs to know; such as mulching. There are so many materials to use for mulch, and differing opinions about how to apply it, it is really best to speak with a professional Minneapolis Landscaper concerning your specific property.

When you mulch you are slow feeding your garden a balanced diet throughout the year. Not only does it help your plants thrive, but it will make it look nice, too. Mulch will break down over time and add a variety of nutrients to the soil, making the garden healthy and well fed. When applied properly, it will also help retain moisture, so that the plants won’t be so apt to dry out during hot spells. Mulch is that insulation factor that will also help control weeds, and maintain an even temperature all year, so the change of seasons won’t take too heavy a toll on the plants underneath it.

 As for types of mulch, there are;

Pine straw- high in acid, this is best for dogwoods, rhododendrons, and azaleas

Pine park nuggets- rather large in size, these will help camouflage falling pedals. They also make a nice path that will supply a visual direction within a garden.

Shredded pine and hardwood mulch- This can be double, and triple shredded mulch. Since it has been processed, it doesn’t last as long, and tends to be reabsorbed back into the soil a little faster; however it makes a beautiful appearance when first applied.

Composted leaf mulch- easily the most common type, but it will break down much faster as well. Since it is so readily available every year, it is cost effective; it is appealing to many property owners.

Green mulch- Like leaf mulch, this is typically what is left over from a fallen tree. These fresh wood chips may produce a short term shortage of nitrogen in the soil, so it is a good idea to add about a half pound of high nitrogen fertilizer per 1,000 sf of 4” thick mulch. This will help keep your garden strong.

The best application will use about 3-5” of mulch across the bed, because this will settle to about 2-4” over time. When it reaches approximately 1“thick, it will be time to replace it again. Remember, don’t load mulch up around the tree truck, this will only encourage root growth above the surface of the ground.

When you need a few answers about how to handle your garden this year, give Minneapolis’ Architectural Landscape Design a call to find out what will work best for you. 952-292-7717

Commercial Landscape Lighting in Minneapolis

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

If you run a business, then you know how challenging it can be to attract your customers’ attention. With so many buildings along a commercial street, making yours stand out is just one of the challenges of getting ahead. One easy way to make your business stand out is to add some outdoor lighting. Simple up-lights added to your building’s exterior will grab anyone’s attention, even if you are not open. There is something about driving by a building that is lit up at night; it makes people remember to stop by the next time they are nearby.

These lights can be hardwired into the buildings existing electric panel, or set up to store solar energy in batteries. Either way, a relatively small initial investment will pay off big in the long run. Even an older building seems to come alive with the proper lighting shining on it.

There was an artist who was not anything special really, he could paint but it was nothing out of the ordinary. At least until he started adding some lights to his frames. He would paint a picture of a house in the woods, but make one window very bright as if someone was inside. This one simple addition to his drab paintings made him a sensation almost overnight. People are drawn to light, so by adding some to your commercial business will only improve your standing in the community.

Spot lights, up-lights, walk way lights, a bright lamp post, there are so many ways accent your place of business it takes an experienced landscaper to help you wade through all the options. Proper landscaping and lighting will define a space and send the message that ‘this place is well taken care of, if you do business here, you will get taken care of, too.’

Make sure you are taking the lead when it comes to presenting your business to the community. Do everyone a favor and light up your life so others will be drawn to you. Call us at Minneapolis’ Architectural Landscape Design to learn more about what we can do for you. 952-292-7717

When your Minneapolis backyard pond is ready for spring

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Depending on where you live, a Minneapolis backyard pond may not be quite ready to set up just yet, so take a few things into consideration before you decide to start feeding the fish. Snow is still falling, and ponds are still freezing and thawing this time of year, so don’t be fooled and start setting up plants and fish that could easily pass away this early in the year. Spring is still a few months away.

You may start to see some string algae at this time of the year, but this is ok. The pond is still dormant, and the bacterium is not active this early in the year. Nothing is stealing nutrients just yet, and this alga is the only green thing in there, so let it be. Remember, even after you clean the pond some algae may still grow this early in the year, but this is not a problem at this time. Once the temperature reaches a consistent 50 degrees, this is the time to start adding beneficial bacteria and other balancing chemicals to the water.

You may start to see some fish coming to the surface looking for food, but if you really care about them, you will wait until their digestion acclimates to the 50+ degrees. It could cause them some problems if they are fed too early.

Cleaning out the pond, and setting the stones in place is fine to do this early, you may even want to drain it a little and take a closer look at what is going on down there. Just remember that you can’t force nature, and trying to jump start your pond too early is mistake that may cost you later in the year. It never hurts to get the advice of a professional in this area, and you will find them at Minneapolis’ Architectural Landscape Design. We are a fully licensed and insured team of horticulturists that love what we do. Setting up a backyard pond, stream, or waterscape is our specialty. So when you are ready to take action, give us a call at 952-292-7717. We are here to serve you.

Be The Toast Of Eden Prairie This Holiday With A Dazzling Display Of Outdoor Christmas Lights

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Following the end of WW2, the United States enjoyed many years of unparalleled prosperity. For the first time, household appliances became commonplace, families took vacations together, and more Americans than ever before purchased automobiles. The car has probably done more to alter the way we live today than any other convenience over the last century. As odd as it may sound at first, widespread automobile usage actually helped pave the way for outdoor holiday lighting.

As a way of mimicking New York’s famed Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, businesses in Los Angeles along Wilshire Blvd. (the ‘Miracle Mile’) set-up 27 giant illuminated showmen in 1957. Reflective of the urban sprawl of Southern California, the Wilshire Blvd. display appealed to passing motorists who could look out their windows as they drove past and enjoy the lights. The public loved it.

In the coming years, this unique automobile-centered approach to community light designs inevitably lead to bigger, brighter, and ultimately more spectacular light displays capable of catching passengers’ attention as they drove by. In fact, one famous mile-long display of lights in Altadena California were so bright that passing cars didn’t even need their headlights on to see where they were going.

Pretty soon businesses all across the southland started holding seasonal competitions to see who could produce the most incredible Christmas light displays, and before long, adjacent neighborhoods got into the craze as well, stringing lights along the eves of their homes, and throughout shrubs and trees. Fancy electrical light displays for the front lawn weren’t too far behind either, and within a matter of only a year or so, a nation-wide holiday tradition was born.

These days, when motorists head-out in search of the most beautiful outdoor light displays at Christmas, they’ve traded in the commotion of downtown for the hush of suburbia. Neighborhood homes ablaze in outdoor holiday lights now draw many thousands of admirer’s each December. From Santa Monica California to your very own Eden Prairie Minnesota, Christmas is the time to show off your joyful spirit. Call ALDMN for Outdoor Holiday Lighitng Services Eden Prairie MN at 952-292-7717 and let there be light!

From St. Paul To Seattle: A Brief History Of Outdoor Holiday Light Displays

Monday, December 5th, 2011

The Christmas holiday is replete with an array of rich decorative traditions that go back centuries. From as far back as pre-Christian times, Roman citizens brought branches from evergreen plants indoors during the winter. Nativity scenes became popular in 1223 thanks to St. Francis of Assisi, and by the early 18th century, the now-famous custom of decorating a tree had taken root in Europe.

These days however, outdoor holiday lights adorning homes all over the world are some of the most recognizable, wide spread, and visually stunning methods of ringing in the Christmas season.

While the first accepted account of a Christmas tree being lit with electrical lights goes back to NYC circa 1882, it wasn’t until roughly four decades later that the public had a chance to fiddle with the colorful twinkling lights themselves. There were some small outdoor lighting sets offered for sale as ‘safe to use’ for outside decorations before 1927 when they became much more mainstream, but unfortunately these early batches were small, dangerous, and extremely impractical for the average family.

Once the craze had officially taken off, novelty companies, and ultimately, General Electric began manufacturing electric outdoor lighting kits that were affordable for practically everyone. By the time the 1930’s rolled around, more American were using them than ever before, and the rest is, pardon the cliché: history.

Part of the reason why decorating for the holidays can feel like such a chore is that it takes quite a hefty effort to hang all those lights. Well there’s no need to exhaust yourself with the outdoor holiday decorating when there’s plenty more things that need your attention, so why not hand the chore over to those who do it professionally: Minneapolis and St. Paul’s own Outdoor Lighting Design Team. We’ll install, maintain, and remove all the decorations themselves, leaving you and yours to enjoy the holiday season the way it was meant to be experienced: joyfully and at peace. Call today: 952-292-7717.
